Aspirational marketing promotes what the company aspires to be but will frequently be unable to deliver. The chain aims to open two gas stations this year -- one near Seoul and another in South Gyeongsang Province.

One common belief about Korean businesses in China in the last 10 years has been that most of them will fail,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
With labor costs rising substantially, the business environment is deteriorating and more Korean firms are moving to Vietnam and India, some say. And that is a mild version. There are also alarming rumors that Korean business owners have been assaulted,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], illegally detained and evicted with nothing but the shirt on their backs.
This year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Chinese government enforced a new labor law,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], guaranteeing a retirement age for long-time employees and reinforcing unions. In the wake of the flight of some 100-odd Korean firms from Qingdao, there are rumors that Korean firms operating in China face mass bankruptcy.
In 2004,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], faced with rumors that Korean firms in China were in trouble,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Federation of Korean Industries and Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency conducted large-scale surveys. They found that the opposite was the case. Businesses which said they were making profits or about to make profits accounted for 72.8 percent of respondents to the FKI poll and 86.8 percent to KOTRA's.
A joint private-public survey team that visited China early this year reported fly-by-night companies account for only 1 to 2 percent of Korean businesses operating in Qingdao; the problem has been hugely exaggerated. A private member of the team said, "More Korean firms are coming to Qingdao now than are pulling out. Why would businesses go to an area where it is difficult to make money and mass bankruptcy is a danger?"
Asked about the success or failure rate of Korean companies operating in China,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], research institutes and Korean firms on the scene often mention a 3-4-3 formula -- 30 percent succeed and make money, 40 percent maintain the status quo and 30 percent are in trouble. In other words,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], China is little different from other countries.
Another common perception is that the Chinese government gives only Korean businesses a hard time. But the new labor law,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the cause of the overnight closures,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], applies equally not merely to foreign businesses but to Chinese ones as well. They too encounter rising labor costs and other factors. It would be thoroughly odd if labor costs did not rise in a country that has achieved over 9 percent average annual growth over the past two decades.
These exaggerated fears persist because the negative experiences are magnified: successful and satisfied businesses keep quiet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], partly because they don��t want to discredit other fellow Korean businessmen facing difficulties by flatly disputing their claims.
But it��s high time we restored the balance. The fly-by-night companies naturally wash their hands of the experience, and the remaining Korean businesses suffer greater scrutiny, including increased anti-Korean sentiment among the Chinese. Still, the Chinese media are cool, saying most of the fly-by-night companies were small and labor-intensive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and would have failed in Korea as well.
President Lee Myung-bak is set to tour Qingdao during his China visit from May 27-30, a point on his itinerary said to have been adopted at the insistence of the foreign affairs and security team over objections from ministries on grounds that the atmosphere there is tense due to the overnight closures and the priority is low. But now the decision has been made, say China experts, Lee should warmly encourage our businesses there; but he must be careful not to send the wrong signal to the Chinese public.
